I wouldn’t shed any tears if Disney (and all its subsidiaries) went utterly defunct. There may have been a time when they had talent and creativity, but that is obviously long past. It’s probably not impossible to redeem it, but that sort of decades long institutional drift is difficult to correct.
Our nation probably needs to go through the penance of having all these long standing institutions/idols being ground into dust.
It’s indicative of problems with corporate governance in this country that Disney shareholders haven’t been able to bounce Iger’s lickspittles off the board.
This is what happens when DEI becomes the standard.
Fun fact: 2024’s domestic ticket revenue was lower than 2000’s. It makes me think it’s the whole industry, not just Disney; then again, Disney makes most of the high-budget movies and sets the tone (or at least it used to buy the franchises that set the tone). Another fun fact: seven of the top ten movie flops of all time were Disney. They make big budget movies but try to play it safe. That works for a while with an established franchise, but it keeps you from creating franchises, and eventually people stop watching bland remakes.
As for Rachel Zegler, this is her fourth major film. West Side Story was considered a box office disappointment. Shazam 2 was a major flop. The Hunger Games prequel actually did ok against minor competition. Now this. ImDB doesn’t list any upcoming projects.
Terrible miscasting. Gal Gadot as the Evil Queen…? That and the fact you have a pro-Palestinian actress, Zegler, running her political mouth whilst co-staring with Gadot who is an Israeli actress…a recipe for discord. I won’t watch it. Maybe the kids will when it goes to a streaming service…maybe..
Does Snow White look like a virgin? In this version Snow White looks like an emotional mess.
Mary sorry to break it to you, but there are no virgins left at Disney or in Hollywood, in general. 😂
From a strictly investment point of view, what does it say about a company that has to reach back nine decades to pull out a perfectly satisfactory product and mutilate it into an unrecognizable mish mash just to say it meets the current cultural standard?
Good point. Creatively, Disney running on fumes.
Note: the first review from The Guardian called it “exhaustingly awful”. They’ve subsequently put out a second review from a different reviewer, this one calling it “toe-curlingly terrible”.
