More seriously, a friend of mine who is likely to be now the oldest surviving combat carrier pilot from the Pacific War, told me that at the end of the War his CO asked him if he want to go regular Navy. His commission was USNR, (United States Naval Reserve) and my friend told his CO that in his case the R stood for Resourceful, and he thought he would do just fine in the civilian world, which he did. Too many Leftists work for large institutions or companies and cannot imagine living without a net. I have been self employed for 37 years, next month. It has been frightening at times, but far more times it has been invigorating and rewarding. Nothing instills confidence in oneself than leading an enterprise from year to year, meeting challenges, making weekly payrolls and having one’s name on the business. Most new business enterprises fail, and the risk is to be carefully considered, but once you are your own boss, few want to have any other.

Many conservatives think the same way. And much of the elite of the elite in the business world are usually on the left, ( e.g. Jeff Bezos, Steve Jobs).
Many conservatives think the same way.
My sympathy for them. Milage can vary, but the three years I spent working for a lawfirm was not the happiest time for me. There are good bosses and bad bosses but not having a boss at all is best if possible.
And much of the elite of the elite in the business world
All the more reason to start one’s own business.
Trying to start my own now after so many years.
How do you not kill yourself from the pointless paperwork? (I just want to sell people games, why do you need this info?)
I do confess Nate that in the battle of the state and federal mandated paperwork it helps being an attorney, but it does not lessen the well merited hatred of it.
One new angle in considering the virtues of self-employment, is the recent creation of an anti-business armed army of IRS agents whose command apparently is to take that target and make it a minefield to avoid.
“an anti-business armed army of IRS agents”
After 37 years I have never had any contact with the IRS. Judging from the lack of efficiency of that agency I think a million more agents would make little difference.
My experience was an attempt to recruit me into the Army Reserves after five years in the Regular Army. I passed on that despite the financial incentive. Turned out to be correct decision as the country went on to get involved in three wars of dubious necessity after that. Sometimes, financial security comes at too high a price.
