On the flip side, in the state of Florida a private concern using the name Brightline has trains operating between West Palm Beach and Miami. They are in the final stages of completing a link to extend service to Orlando with a terminal at the Orlando International Airport. Service is scheduled to start in 2023. There are a lot of new tracks that have been and are being built to support these routes. There are plans to connect with Tampa, and possibly Jacksonville.
From what I’ve heard there are regional passenger train routes that are profitable. It’s the long distance routes that cause the greatest hit to Amtrak’s profitability. But in many communities along these routes it is the community’s lifeline to the rest of the country. This puts the politicians in a bind.
