The reason the dems are so successful is that they have been pulling political tricks since the election of 1800 (Jefferson-Adams-Burr) and went on to Jackson-Adams 1824 and Kennedy-Nixon 1960. They have also succeeded at state levels. In contrast, the only time the Republicans tried and temporarily succeeded was the election of 1876 (Hays-Tilden), and handled that one so badly that President Hays was not elected to a second term and the party never tried again to manipulate the process.
