Then we have the Dred Scott defense of Durbin:

It is a funny thing how so many Catholics have expected public officials like Durbin to defy the Eighth Commandment and ignore that oath. They seem to have wanted Durbin to assert a “mental reservation,” or try to evade his oath to support the Constitution when it came to abortion. That hardly seems like a serious or tenable moral position.
Stephen A. Douglas used precisely that argument against anti-slavery Abraham Lincoln.
Earth to the author of this piece of tripe. Durbin was first elected to Congress as a pro-lifer in 1982. Throughout the 80s he maintained that stance and voted for a constitutional amendment to ban abortion. He switched because he knew that he could not rise in the Democrat hierarchy in Congress as a pro-lifer. He is a completely self-serving weasel who unhesitatingly jettisoned his belief in the sanctity of innocent human life for career advancement. He isn’t worthy to be spat upon, let alone being honored by an ostensibly Catholic Cardinal.

arguments that even the author knew it at the end. Damian is right. They’re panicking.
You remember the arguments you had with Anthony Annett (‘TonyA’, ‘Morning’s Minion’) over Obamacare? It’s implicit in the babble of these types that ‘Catholic social teaching’ commands you endorse one scheme for publicly-subsidized medical care over the existing scheme or posited alternatives to both (“Singapore’s system has too many tail risks…”). No you cannot derive that from the social encyclicals.

Federal law, federal budgets, and federal agencies are cluttered with a junkyard of programs which involve taking money extracted from ordinary taxpayers and distributing it to various Democratic Party clients. Democratic pols uncritically defend all of them and want MOAR spending and yet another program. This habit of Democratic pols is sold by partisan Democrats among the Catholic chatterati and church-o-cracy that so-and-so is a ‘defender of the poor’ blah blah.

Rational person: abortion is intrinsically evil and catholic pols cannot support it.

While there, he forbid any priest permission to pray for the unborn infront of planned parenthood, pray and march in Right to Life parade’s and anything else pro-life.
One looks at this display of moral contumacy and can not help but wonder who has the the greater responsibility to the populace to whom they are supposed to provide guidance and service. Unfortunately we have come to realize that our hope in politicians is in vain. We have then looked to those who minister in compliance with the guidance of a higher authority but now no longer do we have them in sight either. Every civilization in the past that has fallen has first been forsaken by those in moral and civil authority. In terms of history, our coming celebration of 250 years is not so long a time.
