DeSantis Drops Out and Endorses Trump

DeSantis showed that he was not ready to run a national race.  He is ready to govern.  Trump should pick him for his running mate as an insurance against a health problem for himself.  Politically, they are almost entirely on the same page,

I’m just glad that Florida will get to keep him.

As the shenanigans of 2024 multiply, each state will need a strong hand at the tiller. Rough waters ahead.

To be able to govern as president today, you need some of the same attributes you need to wage an effective national campaign. You need a keen sense of timing, political acumen, an ability to persuasively pitch ideas to name a few. DeSantis possesses none of these. He is also politically tone deaf and too easily distracted.

No one with any political common sense would have ever agreed to debate a governor from the other party who is not even running for anything while he is fighting for his political life in the middle of a presidential primary campaign. Sure, DeSantis was able to show how bad a governor Newsom is, but everybody already knew that. But Newsom wasn’t there to defend his record. His objective was to portray DeSantis as a bad Trump imposter. And he did that quite effectively. He destroyed DeSantis with the, “You’re trying to out Trump Trump. And how’s that going for you. You’re down 41 points in own home state.” line. The fact DeSantis won reelection as governor there by 20 points a year before that only drives point home harder.

Barring some miracle, this is the end of line for DeSantis’ political career as an office holder.

Too many people in this country falsely think/thought/misled that Trump would never be on the Republican ticket again.
Best to get that out of the way early.

DeSantis as a political heir apparent, or at least heir presumptive, to Trump makes sense. However, were he to be Trump’s running mate they would run into the Constitutional provision that presidential electors can’t vote for two candidates from the same state. The 30 electors in Florida could vote for either Trump for president or DeSantis for vice president, but not both. The obvious solution would be for Trump to change his state residency back to New York but I’d think that would be fraught with all sorts of problems as well.

I have always preferred that DeSantis should remain in Florida, for the same readon that, on time of war, I would prefer an able commander to be at the front and not warming a chair in the Pentagon. The black hole of Federal power that has manifested in Washington since WW2 has blinded us to how truly critical the States are in maintaining our country and our freedoms.
