Apparently my father solved complicated chemistry problems by reading history books at work.
Most evenings dad would end up snoring on the couch after a tough day of physical labour, as a builder. But, there were the occasional nights dad used to wake up late at night and sit on the couch and think. Ge did this when he had a building issue that he had to resolve before the sun came up the next day and had to be at the job site. If we woke up to grab a drink of water from the kitchen and dad was sitting on the couch staring at a low volume tv, it was because a work issue was keeping him up. When he thought of a solution, he would March himself back to bed. I guess he couldn’t fall asleep until he was happy with a solution in his head…
I would often solve tricky lab procedure problems in my sleep, in the days when I taught high school chemistry.
In earlier days when data management was an occupation, I would often dream the code I needed for a sticky process that was eluding me.
