Hitchcock seemed to be able to get the best out of Stewart as an actor. In other films his acting seemed effortless. In Hitchcock films you could practically see Stewart sweat.

Agree with your choice, Donald. Haven’t seen Rope, though…guess I’ll go find it today. My second favorite of the ones I’ve seen is North By Northwest.
The Birds rattled my chain and Psycho creeped me out of my gourd.
We own Rear Window and Raymond Burr’s performance was nothing to sneeze at. Jimmy Stewart, imo, was one of, if not the best, actor of all time.
He set the bar high and many an actor couldn’t come reach his heights.
Believable and smooth deliveries. I loved his Johnny Carson interviews.
His wit and charm were authentic. A great performer in my opinion.
We like pretty much all Hitchcock movies that we’ve seen. Among our favorites are Strangers on a Train and Rebecca and Rope. We also like North by Northwest as one of our favorite ‘comfy’ movies. Psycho, as always, is a great movie for the spooky season. The boys recently had a spirited debate about whether or not the earlier Hitchcock villains were actually more interesting than the later ones (Norman Bates being the exception there). They concluded Bruno, from Strangers on a Train, is one of the coldest and most interesting villains in movies, not just Hitchcock.
I haven’t seen that many, but I loved The Trouble with Harry.
Strangers on a Train, but also The 39 Steps. Led me to look into what else Robert Donat did. Found two of his films particularly interesting. Knight Without Armour is about the Russian Revolution. The Adventures of Tartu is about an undercover agent in Nazi Germany. Both of these films show evil as it impacts the ordinary man without the relativism present in our present cinema. Easy to find on the Internet as few care about these films.
The only three Hitchcock movies I’ve seen are Rear Window, Vertigo and North by Northwest. Of the three, I’d have to say Rear Window is the best mystery/whodunit, Vertigo is the best psychological thriller and North by Northwest the best for just sitting back and enjoying the chase.
My three favorites are North by Northwest, Rear Window and Notorious.
Loved Notorious. Great cast and suspenseful. Not shown offen enough on channels like TCM. To Catch A Thief we liked for its beauty not the plot. Kelly, Grant and the French Riviera in Technicolor.
