Below zero here in Central Illinois with winds sending the wind chill down to -35. A bit brisk even for my Newfoundland blood. My Jack Russell terrier made her quickest trip in and out yesterday. Illinois: terrible government and miserable weather. What’s not to love?
At least in California, we have good weather.
What’s to love in Illinois?

All your nuclear power stations generating 53% of Illinois electricity no matter how cold it gets.
No freezing gas or oil pipelines.
No freezing railroad tracks & trains delivering coal.
No frozen wind mill blades.
No snowed over solar photovoltaics.
Just heavy metal atomic fission.
PS, thank the reactor operators and nuclear engineers staying on duty Christmas Eve and Christmas Day that your lights and heating will all work. Those gas pumps pumping methane to your furnance work on nuclear electricity, and so do the furnace controls.
LQC, that might explain why, so far, Illinois hasn’t had any widespread power outages. There was talk this summer about brownouts, etc., but it didn’t happen, at least not where we live.
Great points, LQC, couldn’t agree more. Unfortunately, Gov. Jabba the Hutt and his minions want to shut them all down because, you know…
A temporary reprieve has been granted, but long-term the fools still think they can replace those plants with “renewables.” And they all just got re-elected, again. Sigh.
At least in California, we have good weather.
Yeah, but you have to live around Californians to enjoy it.
Michigan has not had any major power outages (well, the Consumer’s Energy part anyway–I’ve been checking religiously.) I have never heard of a gas pipeline freezing. Having said that, I wish we’d dumped these stupid wind/solar farms for nuclear.
It’s not the pipeline itself, DJH, that freezes to block methane flow, but rather all the complex valve controls and digital electronic flow and pressure transmitters, etc., not to mention the methane blowers / pumps & associated motors themselves. It ain’t just a pipeline. And it’s all exposed to the environment.
To borrow a common joke from the Ace of Spades blog…..I saw Heavy Metal Atomic Fission open for (name of famous rock band) at (well known concert venue) in (year).
It’s now 9.45 am on Christmas morning here in the South west Pacific – Merry & a Blessed Christmas to all. Oh, and you’ll be pleased to know that its presently a pleasant 22 deg.C (72 F) with a light NW breeze, warming up to lovely 27 C (81 F). Going to my sons place at Mt.Maunganui for Christmas lunch & celebrations. Maybe a dip in the pool – or perhaps a stroll to the surf beach a few minutes walk away – ah – decisions, decisions.
Oh , and I’m not gloating – honest. (chuckle)
But seriously, I trust that you all keep safe while the USA is experiencing its bad weather bomb – I gather Texas is going to freeze up again like last year. Prayers for your wellbeing & safety.
Well…If ya got ’em smoke ’em.
I’m happy for you and your tribe Don Beckett.
The stroll down the beach sounds very pleasant. Especially at this moment. In NW Michigan we are dealing with snowdrifts of insanity.
The wind hasn’t let up in two days.
No warm breezes at Good Harbor bay today. Wind gusts up 50mph. Temp is 15°….[-10° in the Michigan breeze.] Just hunkered down, waiting and watching for the Christ child. Merry Christmas to you.
We have an extra shovel incase you miss the White Christmas. :^)

Thanks Don and Merry Christmas. Not every place can be a weather paradise! Just got back from Christmas Mass. The savage weather made me appreciate even more the calm, peace and warmth of the Mass.
Snowstorms and blizzards aside, I would love my kids to experience a white Christmas. So would they! It was 30 degrees the last few days and on Christmas Day today and slightly humid in Sydney Australia. They had the AC blaring last night at Midnight Mass. It’s was tough standing in front of a hot stove today. But We swam today with the kids.
We’ve had our fair share of extreme weather this year- floods.
Keep safe and Merry Christmas Donald and TAC.
Merry Christmas Ezabelle!
Ezabelle, the poor folks in Western New York would gladly trade places with you. I don’t think I have seen a worse winter storm in my 59 years.
