People in this world are seldom poor because they are ‘forced’ to be, but because they live in societies where technological adaptations and the organization of production generate a particular quantum of goods and services. Those societies and various strata within them would indubitably be more prosperous with certain institutional adjustments. The lack of such adjustments is not a consequential vector influencing people to fly planes into commercial buildings half a world away. Afghanistan was and is impoverished. It has never been anything else. Al Qaeda was never a paladin of justice and what injustices were to be found in Afghanistan weren’t generated by the man who ran Cantor Fitzgerald.

bin Laden wasn’t poor; he was quite affluent … He was also, however, a very good follower of Mohammad. I can’t for the life of me understand why saying so is anathema to our ruling class.
The professional-managerial stratum (and certainly institutional elites) is in our time largely composed of people who (1) lie like normal people breathe or (2) are addled by various self-deceptions. It’s killing us.

But directly related to how much conflict is drummed up by a Marxist narrative that *always* blames my poverty on that SOB’s greed.
Libs, so often inconsistent, want to cure the evils committed by the poor by making them no longer poor. Perhaps (instead) we could instead teach the poor who do evil not to do the evil anymore – that poverty, riches, habit, upbringing, environment, temperament are explanation for sin, but never valid excuses for it.
It is written that there is a season for everything. In this event, it might be useful to note the words of Paul that “not without cause does the ruler carry the sword.” The cause is not yet complete.
One should note also that all but four of the 9/11 hijackers were from Saudi Arabia, a country suffering from certain pathologies in political economy but not poor. Two others were from the UAE, for which the same applies. Another was from Egypt, a middle income country with a satisfactory income distribution which has for decades posted incremental improvements in its real income levels and in its relative position vis a vis the west. One hijacker was from Lebanon, a once moderately prosperous country ruined by sectarian violence. ‘Poverty’ and ‘oppression’ weren’t driving this, and that’s grossly obvious.
