The Mother of God and the Father of our Nation
- Donald R. McClarey
Donald R. McClarey
Cradle Catholic. Active in the pro-life movement since 1973. Father of three, one in Heaven, and happily married for 43 years. Small town lawyer and amateur historian. Former president of the board of directors of the local crisis pregnancy center for a decade.
Mary, our perpetual Virgin, Mother of the Catholic Church, was George Washington’s protectrix.
I love how you honour Our Lady on TAC, Don. That’s one of the best parts about being a Catholic. Well, IMHO, anyway.
In agreement with Ezabelle.
Amen.
I think this painting has enormous historical value for us as Americans. I have been to Mount Vernon, but I was never aware of this picture.
It ought to be publicized and promoted as an American icon. It brings out a hidden presence of devotion to the Mother of God even at the heart of our national story.
Maybe this is how those stories about Washington being a deathbed convert to the Catholic faith started.
Who painted it?
Alas, the artist, obviously talented, is unknown.
