Being a jubilee year, I am guessing and hoping for Cardinal Sarah to become our next Pope. “Christ hear us. Christ graciously hear us.”

Eastern Catholics, I am told, have issues with Cardinal Sarah, not the least of which is his hardline stance on priestly celibacy. Right now Eastern Catholic priests like their Orthodox brethren are allowed to be married. I therefore doubt Cardinal Sarah will be elected as Pontiff, though he is the best choice IMHO. Our best hope is Cardinal Pizzaballa.

No disagreement with your outlook, LQC, although I still believe someone out of “the peripheries” may emerge as a compromise choice. And FWIW, Fr. Gerald Murray has positive things to say about Cdl. P.

“his hardline stance on priestly celibacy”

Cardinal Sarah is obviously adamant about not changing the Latin Rite rule, but I’m sure he’s aware of the Eastern Rite procedure and of the facts that 1) allowing men who are already married to become priests is not the same as allowing men who have already become priests to marry (IINM, Eastern Rite clergy can’t marry after they have become deacons) and 2) only celibate priests can become bishops in the Eastern Rite and, I believe, in the Orthodox churches as well.
