Nixon wanting to duke it out with someone strikes a true note. A lot of suppressed anger in that man.
I Always Thought that LBJ had the Look of a Cattle Thief

He always came across as a creep. That image of him standing next to Jackie Kennedy being sworn in send shivers down my spine. Love JFK or hate him, no man with a beating heart would be so indifferent to a woman who just held her dead husband head in her hands. LBJ will always have that lurking man stench attached to him.
He was sworn into office on an aeroplane by a federal judge traveling with him. Aside from LBJ and the judge, there are about a dozen other people visible in the photograph, Mrs. Kennedy and Mrs. Johnson among them. Not sure what you fancy he should have been doing at that moment that he wasn’t doing.
The author’s giving you an account of his imagination.

Cannot imagine Nixon wanting to duke it out with anyone. He was never an athlete and had poor small motor skills. He liked books. He was an introvert with a small circle of friends. One part of his friendship with Bebe Rebozo was Rebozo tutoring the middle-aged Nixon on sporting pastimes. He had scripted meetings with his staff because ordinary conversation was difficult for him. Nixon at work often had outbursts; Henry Kissinger said you’d go back to your office and Nixon would call back later and retract everything he’d told you to do. Nixon’s brother had a different account; he said his brother rarely lost his temper, but on the few occasions he did, you’d get a litany about all of your transgressions (“he went back two whole years”).
Art Deco is always a wealth of good information. Thank you!
*Not sure what you fancy he should have been doing at that moment that he wasn’t doing.*
It’s what he was doing. Suppressing a smile the whole time except when he couldn’t anymore at the winking Albert Congressman straight after the oath.
I’m curious, are you still defending Bush junior these days…?
To say LBJ had the looks of a cattle thief is an insult to those guys. He was a vote thief, for cryin’ out loud!
It’s what he was doing. Suppressing a smile the whole time except when he couldn’t anymore at the winking Albert Congressman straight after the oath.

This is the second time I’ve seen this contention in print in recent days. Neither a suppressed smile nor a wink is visible in that photograph.
I’m curious, are you still defending Bush junior these days…?

Defending him contra what contention? What does Bush the Younger have to do with this discussion?
*Neither a suppressed smile nor a wink is visible in that photograph.* LBJ is a creep.
*What does Bush the Younger have to do with this discussion?* You work it out. You’re intelligent.
The power of “both” Stephen. I think LBJ operated on the principle of “If it’s not nailed down, it’s mine!”
Nixon played Junior Varsity football in high school Art and college football. He retained a keen interest in football all of his life. Nixon and his wife had a bowling alley installed in the White House and were avid players. Nixon was an introvert and he was also highly competitive in everything he undertook.
