A Horse is a Horse, of Course, of Course

Something for the weekend:  The theme song for Mr. Ed.  A fun aspect of growing up as a kid in the sixties was the delightfully daffy shows on TV:  a talking horse, a stranded martian on earth, a mother being reincarnated as a car, a beautiful android, a beautiful genie, a beautiful witch, two shows featuring every day families of comic monsters, comic castaways, cavalry v. Indians for laughs,  comedic angels, funny prisoners of war, etc.  The show quality wasn’t often great, but considering the tripe on videos today, they shine in retrospect.

I am absolutely enjoying the sputtering about by the defenders of the WNBA to avoid talking about what the “W” actually means in the title. The Bee did solid satire with this article.

I watched reruns of Mr. Ed with my dad as a kid on Nick-at-Nite back in the 80’s. It was often one of the last things I saw before bedtime.

Mr. Ed was inspired by a long running series of children’s books(1928-1958) about talking animals featuring a character called Freddy the Pig. They were favorites of my late father, imaginative and well written and even topical. “Freddy and the Politician” is an eye-opener on electoral shenanigans still in play. My favorite scene is a 1928 roadtrip to Florida, where the critters discover a half-bushel of $20 gold pieces.

But it is not funny. Some people I know want the horse to be declared a sovereign person and given citizenship for all the work that the horses do.
I argued that the horse does not have an immortal soul. Without the immortal soul, the horse is a horse.

Wasn’t there a show with Francis the talking mule at West Point? He had the same voice as Mr Ed.
