The Incredibly Stupid One

Memorial Day Reflection: A Story of Courage and Faith As we remember those who sacrificed their lives in service to our country this Memorial Day, the story of Doug Hegdahl reminds us of the resilience of the human spirit and the power of faith in the face of adversity. Hegdahl, a U.S. Navy petty officer, was captured during the Vietnam War and endured brutal captivity. His captors, mistaking his quiet demeanor for ignorance, underestimated his intelligence and resolve. In the words of Proverbs 28:1, “The wicked flee when no one pursues, but the righteous are bold as a lion.” Hegdahl’s boldness lay in his unwavering faith and his clever strategy for survival. He played the role of a simpleton, humming a song to avoid answering questions. Little did his captors know, he was ingeniously memorizing the names of his fellow prisoners, weaving them into the melody of “Old MacDonald Had a Farm.” Upon his release, Hegdahl astounded everyone by reciting the names of over 256 missing POWs. His actions exemplify the biblical wisdom of Proverbs 16:32, “He who is slow to anger is better than the mighty, and he who rules his spirit than he who takes a city.” Hegdahl’s story is a testament to the power of faith, perseverance, and the unwavering spirit of those who serve. Let us honor his legacy and the sacrifices of countless others by cherishing the freedoms they fought to protect.
