I suspect there is less to this than meets the eye. At eighty-four and having undergone colon surgery recently, the Pope obviously is not in robust health. Would it surprise me if he died in the next year? No. Would it surprise me if he were still Pope in three years? No. I think it is obvious that some Cardinals are anticipating a Conclave in the foreseeable future. When this will be is a question to be answered in that unknown country, the future. I would ask that any comments to this post reflect that we are in Advent, and that we all owe God a death. I pray for the Pope’s physical and spiritual well being and I pray for our Church which has seen much better days than these.
VATICAN—Pope Francis stumbled while boarding his flight back to Rome, today.
It was reported he recovered shortly after, and later made his customary visit to Santa Maria Maggiore.

Reminiscent of Beijing Biden stumbling up the steps when boarding a flight. Birds of a feather ?
It was recently noted that he now has two nurses with him when traveling. I don’t know what is usual. This could just be gossip to weaken his power. From a week ago…

If something happens to Francis, Benedict doesn’t get to take over again?
This does give me an idea for a couple of Babylon Bee headline: “Cardinals reveal that next Pope will be decided by YuGiOh tournament.”
“In surprise turn, Joe Biden elected Pope with record number of cardinals voting.”
The surgery was six months ago. He should have recovered by now.
That he has two nurses suggests he’s under supervision most of the time. I’m guessing their duties include medication management, help in the toilet, bathing, help with oxygen supply, &c. Especially the toilet. Waking hours with one of them on call overnight.
Note, that for the generic man of 85, the probability of dying over the succeeding 12 months is about 10%. A double digit percentage are suffering from dementia to one degree or another.
