Wait, the Oscars are tonight? Unbelievable. This blog post is literally the only reason I know, and I’ve been surfing blogs and YouTube off and on all day. Nobody is talking about it. Nobody knows. Nobody cares.

In 1980, a satisfactory film that won an Oscar would already have been seen by a large audience motivated by advertising and word of mouth. I suppose the Oscar would be helpful in marketing it for television or for second run theatres. After 1980, it would likely help video rentals and sales. Not sure what it’s good for now. It was always a tedious exercise in self-congratulation by Hollywood and the multiplication of award categories was the subject of Spittin’ Image parodies.
One of John Podhoretz’ quirks as a youth is that he was mad for the Oscars. Had to watch them beginning to end and memorize the winners. Other youths put that region of the brain to work memorizing baseball stats.
