Cradle Catholic. Active in the pro-life movement since 1973. Father of three, one in Heaven, and happily married for 43 years. Small town lawyer and amateur historian. Former president of the board of directors of the local crisis pregnancy center for a decade.
I have a small replica of Michelangelo’s Pietá on the shelf at home. I still hold the original to be the most astonishing piece of art ever fashioned by human hands. Everything else fights for second.
I also keep a painting in my bedroom my grandfather made me when I was younger of the Agony in the Garden. He was a gruff, career military man (3 wars), but had quite the artistic side and painted lots of scenes from the life and especially Passion of Christ.
My favorite painting is Madonna of the Book by Sandro Botticelli, which I use as my blog posting avatar. If I could afford to buy a full size framed copy I would, but then I’d have to figure out where to put it…
Josh, I have been fortunate to see Michelangelo’s Pieta at the Vatican twice in my life. I have said that if he had done nothing else, it would have been enough. It is moving and magnificent.
I would have the same problem Elaine, but for the Law Mines, where I have most of my Art. I do have a few icons at home.
I have some icons as well – we keep the classic Wedding of Cana icon in our dining room and a Madonna and Child in our kitchen.
I received at Christmas a print of Rembrandt’s Storm of the Sea of Galilee, which now hangs in my home office. So much to appreciate about this artwork, but I never noticed that there is one poor disciple hanging his head over the side of the boat. I like to imagine that this is Matthew, definitively a landlubber.
I have three paintings by my daughter who left carnegie tech art school to become a nurse and two chinese silk landscapes given to my by chinese grad students in my research group.
We have icons of Our Lady of the Rosary and Cornelius & Cyprian written by my sister-in-law. Also prominent is a print of the angels playing music for Mary and the Infant Jesus.
