From the only reliable source of Catholic news on the net, Eye of the Tiber:
Geneva, Switzerland–New guidelines set down by the international community during the fifth Geneva Convention this week has extensively defined the basic, spiritual wartime rights of the Church Militant by outlawing all Marty Haugen music used in and around war-zones. What is officially being called The Geneva Convention relative to the Protection of Parishioners in Times of Spiritual War has become the fifth convention establishing the standards on international law for the humanitarian treatment of spiritual war. “Our new resolution states that all Catholics who are in the process of spiritual warfare are to be treated humanely,” Said General of the Counsel Robert Durant at a press conference earlier this morning. “The following acts are to be henceforth prohibited: Violence to life and person, in particular, cruel treatment and torture by means of being made to listen to Gather Us In. Outrages upon personal dignity, in particular humiliating and degrading treatment such as asking parishioners to sing along to We Remember. And finally, all acts requiring parishioners to listen to said music during the reception of communion.”
Pope Francis is reported to have said: “Who is Marty Haugen?”
The concern about music commonly used in liturgy being weak catchetically and perhaps more base than beautiful- is that just pretty much an American Catholic issue, or is the same type of liturgical drift happening worldwide?
A thank you would be in order to the General of the Counsel for the new resolution.
I join Pope Francis…I have never heard of Marty Haugen either.
Apparently I am among the lucky few who shall remain blissfully ignorant.
Marty Haugen does not rock. This rocks. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=t4eX2NogBEs
Egads … guilty, guilty, guilty, forgive me father, for I have sinned. I have often enjoyed his hymns, not for the depth (er, lack thereof) at times, but for their sing-ability. Unless there is a strong choir or canter carrying us – the joy in communal singing does have merit.
I love it when we all sing together too ! Esp canticle of sun oh praise Him oh praise Him Alleluia Alleluia!
😉 I like A Mighty Fortress Is Our God 🙂
On EWTN some time ago, I heard this beautiful rendition of the Prayer of Saint Francis, “Make Me A Channel of Your Peace” sung by Angelina.
.
Hope you enjoy.

There is a refuge from the bland, droll, brain-cell-killing ditties of Marty Haugen, Dan Schutte and the St. Louis Jesuits. The refuge is the Traditional Latin Mass. I like the Low Mass, as I am not required to sing (neither does anyone else in attendance) and I could not carry a tune if it had a handle.
Marty Haugen…ugh.
Here in this place, our comfortable parish,
All of the statues carried away,
See in each face a vacuous visage,
Brought here by guilt or by R.C.I.A.
Gather us in, by Beemer or Hummer,
Gather us in, so we can feel good,
Come to us now in this barren Zen temple,
With only a shrub and an altar of wood.
We are the young, our morals a mystery,
We are the old, who couldn’t care less,
We have been warned throughout all of history,
But we enjoy this liturgical mess.
Gather us in, our radical pastor,
Gather us in, our unveiled nun,
Call to us now, with guitars and bongos,
Hang up your cellphones and join in the fun!
Here we will take some wine and some water,
Whether it changes, we really don’t care.
But when the Sign of Peace comes, our pastor,
Jumps from the altar and hugs like a bear.
Gather us in, uncatechized masses,
Gather us in, the liberal elite,
Help us to form our personal Credo,
Give us a choice between white bread and wheat.
One of our teens, she serves on the altar,
Our only other, he plays bass guitar.
Sister preaches in Crocs and a pantsuit,
She reads it straight to us from NCR.
Gather us in, the truly enlightened,
Texts and rubrics are too much a fuss.
We all eschew outdated religion,
Our god is our bellies, our worship is Us.
Here in this place, a bad song is starting,
Now will the altar turn into a stage.
All that is holy is slowly departing,
Making a way for the coming New Age.
Gather us in, though we are like captives.
But to miss Mass on Sunday, that would be wrong.
But Lord hear our plea, regarding M. Haugen:
Give him the courage to put down that bong.
Dear Father Smith make a beeline procession,
Run if you have to, make it real terse.
If you can start this Mass very quickly,
Maybe we’ll only have to sing but one verse.
O Dear Lord Jesus, You are the Savior
We’ve promised to follow, whatever the cost.
But we didn’t know this song had been written:
Would you terribly mind if we came off our cross?

Thats funny. Here I Am Lord is still my favorite to sing.
Is Mr. Haugen sitting on the edge of his seat to see which way this Pope is going with SSA so that he can join the Church?
Alphatron, thanks! (still humming) salve, salve, salve regina…
I must confess, though I am not fond of the Novus Ordo (sorry, folks, I just don’t like it), I do like some of Haugen’s songs: Gather Us In, All Are Welcome, Bring Forth the Kingdom of God.
.
(Mr. McClarey, though, ought to get his rendition copyrighted!)
(Oh, I see the Mr. McClarey is not the composer. Well, I do hope the original composer did copyright his song.)
Some of the songs that are fun to sing could easily be used at some other kind of gathering retreat or prayer service but they just aren’t the best choice for the liturgy
“Is Mr. Haugen sitting on the edge of his seat to see which way this Pope is going with SSA so that he can join the Church?”

Thank you, El. I would have been the first comment here, but I could not think of a way to phrase and disseminate the fact that Dan Schutte and Marty Haugan care nothing for their scandal in the church. I have seen the little children have their life sucked out of them at Mass with this seductive nonsense. “Shine Jesus Shine” is another misrepresentation of worship. It is actually disrespect for God.
Here I Am Lord is still my favorite to sing.
…my deepest, most profound condolences, sir…
I do like some of Haugen’s songs: Gather Us In, All Are Welcome, Bring Forth the Kingdom of God.
…as you no doubt are aware…Haugen is not Catholic…and in fact has been highly critical of the Church for the male only priesthood…the fact his music is heard within ten miles of any Catholic mass is a scandal…
…Donald McClary…is that perchance a photo of General Rosecrans you use as your avatar…? A remarkable likeness if it is not…
Yep. I have long been a fan of Old Rosie.
Rob B: FYI. Here I Am Lord is not a Haugen song. Composed by Dan Schutte.

…thank you…though I am aware of that, and in fact did not insinuate that it was…actually, I find Mr Schutte even more untenable than Haugen, regardless of his Catholic background…but the blue haired ladies of the parish love his twaddle, so we get a lot of it…
Sigh . Everyone has their preferences. Blue hair is right out with most of us, whether the wearer is a genteel and accomplished 70 year old or a 20 year old student of life- male, female, or mixed.
Just saw the post from NCR on the San Fran commission to promote beauty in liturgy and music … which for some strange reason reminded me of the one performance we all can agree on!! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sI8lS8hr-nY
