Born in Gaul, she was a martyr in Rome in the second century. A popular saint in Italy in the Middle Ages, numerous legends grew up about her, so it is difficult to determine where history ends and fancy begins. Most accounts state that she preached the Christian faith fearlessly and was put to death for it, and perhaps that is all we really need to know in order to honor her.
