The actual right is aware of it. Has been since “Joe the Plumber” got “vetted.” The problem is, the last eight years have demonstrated that there are very, very few authentic conservative leaders.
Instead, the right has been led by grifters who have called themselves conservatives for years–but they spend the bulk of their energy white-knighting for their friends on the left and joining the screams for deplatforming.
It’s hard for me to avoid the conclusion that almost every public conservative is a pay cut from becoming Rick Wilson.
Everyone to the right of Biden who doesn’t have foundation money, Chamber backing or sweet baksheesh from Big Tech is on their own.
I’m going to offer a partial demurral. I wouldn’t say ‘very few’. It’s been evident for some time that a large fraction of the Republicans in Congress are careerists who will betray their voters. Conservatively 1/3 if not more. They don’t collectively have much heart. It’s also evident that much of the elite bar which is nominally Republican is an enemy. As for the opinion journalists and think-tank denizens, we’ve learned there’s a chasm between them and ordinary Republican voters. The American Spectator, PJ Media, and Rush Limbaugh are on their side. The rest, push came to shove, were not.
