I have wondered on occasion if the Francis pontificate was perhaps a huge practical joke by God, but that strikes me as near blasphemy and to involve God in a process easily explained by human folly and hubris.

To be fair, a man m may be a good comedian and a bad man.
(There are plenty of stand up comedians who fit this bill.)
Notice I say “and” – the qualities are no more connected than accountant and adulterer. A man may easily be one, both, or neither.
Here’s another one:
The Pope, a witch doctor and a dozen pagans with a Pachamama statue walk into the Vatican gardens. The groundskeeper says, “Welcome Holy Father, everything is ready for you, if you’d walk this way …”. The Pope replied, “If I could walk that way I wouldn’t need this witch doctor!”
