Remembrance of Things Past

By and large the Americans and the Brits got along pretty well during World War II.   The Brits usually went out of their way to be good hosts and most American servicemen minded their manners and enjoyed the hospitality shown by most Brits.  A bright moment in a grim time.

Someone might want to give the current Brits similar advice. And oh yeah. 1984 was a warning not a playbook. Three times as many arrests in Britain as in communist China for saying things the government doesn’t like. They were arrogant and 1776 and they’re arrogant in 2025.

I find it interesting that the British had to import a German King to avoid the rightful Catholic heir and the US took in large numbers of German people. Appears we got the best part of the process.

Donald:
It was very common in those centuries for some or part of the ruling family to come from abroad. German or part-German princes were everywhere from Catherine the Great in Russia to the Hapsburg Kings of Spain. George I (whose English was so poor he conversed with his British ministers in Latin) was Queen Anne’s nearest Protestant relative. No significant portion of the population wanted the Catholic Stuarts back (and Parliament would have taken a Protestant Stuart, did he exist). Jacobitism proved a bloody flop.

Tom Byrne: Quite correct and all started with Bloody Bess who murdered her putative successor, Mary, Queen of Scots so that the rather unstable, but Protestant, James would succeed her.

Or, if anyone prefers, Mary was “executed”, an action that turned out to be quite expedient.
