There hasn’t been an untainted election in Venezuela in 27 years and Maduro and his lickspittles in the security forces took to ignoring adverse results years ago. Uruguay is the only place in South America where the left lawfully holds the presidency and the legislature, and not by much in either case. The right has a good shot in the upcoming presidential elections in Chile. Colombia has a leftist president but a legislature controlled by the opposition. That pattern may repeat itself next year. The legal harassment of the former President of Brazil and his associates looks dismayingly familiar.

And I suspect that Pope Leo does not, in fact I have no idea because Pope Leo has said nothing about it. Pope Francis spoke a lot, and that was too much for people, Pope Leo is very circumspect, and that’s not enough for people.
