PopeWatch: How Low Can He Go?

Donald R. McClarey
Cradle Catholic. Active in the pro-life movement since 1973. Father of three, one in Heaven, and happily married for 43 years. Small town lawyer and amateur historian. Former president of the board of directors of the local crisis pregnancy center for a decade.

On the one hand, Francis spouts bromides about the need for peace in the Israel/Hamas conflict— while on the other hand he seems fine with politicizing the Nativity in the service of Hamas.
Yet Francis came out against denying Holy Communion to pro-abortion politicians (Biden, Pelosi, et. al.) because to do so would be “politicizing the Eucharist”.
I hope I’m wrong, but I get the impression that for this man and his friends, ‘politicizing the Faith’ is only seen as a bad thing if it has a negative impact on a cause the left supports.
Lost the plot.
Jorge the Heretic never ceases to disappoint. I really hope and pray that God Almighty has mercy on His Church, and desposes and anathematizes that man, all his clerics, and all his works.
Agreed, although, admittedly the nativity was sent to the Vatican by Palestinian Catholics from Bethlehem. I get his point, but the “virtue signaling” is nauseating.
I’m old enough to remember when progressive and leftwing Christians decried putting the American flag anywhere near Jesus, or even close to the Faith. In my ministry days, I was part of a (largely progressive leaning) organization that had an entire discussion about removing flags from churches altogether, and laying off the July 4th shoutouts and such. And I remember well Catholics on the Internet raging against those paintings showing Jesus and the American flag, or the cross and the flag, as a form of blasphemy against God. I’ll wait for them to speak up about this.
Dave G:
The lib-cats would likely say “well, Jesus was on the side of the oppressed and yada, yada. So that’s OK”.
Of course Jesus was both a Palestinian and a Jew, but I guess a “theme blanket” that expressed both was not available.
Let us remember that his homeland was a haven for “Nein! Vee are not Germans!” after the last great European Unpleasantness. He’s of an age to have had it all rub off on him.
What am I missing here? It looks like the figures are carved out of wood. Is there some significance to Hamas?

George:
Presumably, it’s olive wood from superannuated trees cut down to make space for new plantings. We have a group of Palestinian Christians who sell olive wood carvings outside our church once a year. Some of the work’s pretty good.
George and Tom, the politicization stems not from carving the crèche figures from olive wood— it’s more about using a keffiyeh to line the manger. Over the decades, that distinctive head cloth has become identified with Hamas. It would be difficult to find a photo of Yasser Arafat not wearing it, and photos of anti-Israel/pro Hamas protests anywhere in the world will be a sea of those distinctive cloths.
This wasn’t accidental.
So there’s an issue with the pattern on the cloth? As opposed to plain white?
I don’t think I would have paid an ounce of heed to the cloth surrounding the Christ child if someone didn’t point it out.
…but by golly, the traditional Mass is still the problem!!
sheesh
Look on the bright side: Imagine if he could issue pontifical pardons. Guy, Texas
Unfortunately, it is not just Pope Bergolio. The Church of God has been totally infiltrated by like – minded heretics and apostates.

Don’t remember that. It’s rubbish. Criminals from the Nazi regime managed to hide out in a number of South American countries. White people do not look out of place there, law enforcement and civil administration there are comparatively weak, and the standard of living is more agreeable than would be the case in most of the world.

We are talking about three and four digit populations in countries with eight digit populations. They would not have had an influence on any significant bloc of people.
