That’s the cost of a one way ticket to hell. Those numbers can’t be right can they? Is he giving 90% of that income away to the poor?
Is he a servant of God or a pimp?
On the other hand, two pennies was the widows complete net worth. Her eternal lodging has the most incredible view and is among the most striking residences in Heaven.
This is why so many of the diocesan money people have been turning to governmental funding – the various appeals are becoming losers for different reasons. My own diocesan (Wilmington) appeal weekend is coming. I don’t partake in slush funds.
I should seek to understand and obviously I don’t understand. A Bishop lives on the property of the cathedral in his diocese… I believe.
Do Cardinal’s have private living arrangements or are they too living on property owned by the Church?
Why 2 million in 2020?
I’m naive I guess.
Philip: he had made plans to retire to a nice seminary in the DC area, just like his predecessor, McCarrick. Those plans, like McCarrick’s before him, had to change when the skeletons all started falling out of his closet.
Under Francis, clerics like Wuerl (and Zanchetta) are given cushy accommodations and stipends in the Vatican upon retirement for their years of loyal service. Maybe he’s being paid to keep his mouth shut?
A retirement program for a Catholic priest (outside the religious orders) should be a Medigap plan, ltc insurance, rent on a one-bedroom or studio apartment, and a modest cash stipend which covers groceries, car maintenance, renter’s and auto insurance, cable & wireless bills, occasional clothing purchases, and some extra.
Thank you Art and CAG.
Hush money, skeletons … you’d think we were talking about politicians… but thats redundant I suppose. Sad when the two things look so similar. May the life of the religious regain it’s integrity through pious living and continuous prayer.
My medieval mind thinks that the Church should establish a penitential order. Modest accomodations where the offending clergy could live with their needs met while praying for those they have offended and the Church as a whole.
Not very likely, I know, with the bishops we’ve got, but one can dream.

I think that your suggestion is excellent.
A halfway house of sorts.
Halfway from Hell to Heaven.
Call it Purgatory House.
Crime pays
If it was hush money, you’d think it would have continued. If it was ongoing ministry activities, it makes sense that the number drops now that he’s in his mid-80’s.
Money Laundering.

I gather you don’t mind that he ain’t a cheap date.
Art, I did plus-click your comment about priestly retirement.
Money corrupts.
Reset the whole requirement for a priests vocation.
Priests should take a vow of poverty. Their “job” should not be treated in the same way you would a regular job. Priests become priests because it is a special calling from God. Therefore the vow of “poverty” should not be dependant on whether they are part of a particular Order ie. Franciscan or Dominican. It should particularly include high ranking officials ie. bishops and Cardinals. They can still keep the traditions of dress and residence but live very simply. No property, no accumulated wealth, no indulging in creature comforts etc..they should die with not a cent to their name.
It goes part and parcel with dying to self and following our Lord (who was poor Himself) and who asked His Apostles to leave everything and follow Him. This is what the vocation requires in order to grow in Faith and guide the Faithful. It will create holier priests and the knock-on effect to the Faithful will be remarkable.
Otherwise if they can’t do that then the vocation is not for them.

2019: McCarrick laicized (Wuerl silent)
2020: (Scant) McCarrick report released (Wuerl silent)
2021: McCarrick arrested for abuse of a minor. (Wuerl silent)
2022: McCarrick trial delayed, no explanation. (Wuerl uninvolved)
2023: McCarrick found not competent to stand trial. (Wuerl no longer relevant.)
… I hope this helps. 😉
