I have noticed this a lot. The fast food places lost their regular staffs in 2020 and they have been replaced with too many people who are under trained and/or have zero work ethic. How many times have you seen fast food places closed because of staffing shortages? How many times have you seen soda machines that have not been refilled? How many times have the bathrooms been disgusting? How many times have you dealt with employees who seem to be stoned or who clearly do not give a damn. Paying through the nose for food that might make you sick is a bad bargain. I also blame management who, in most cases, have done little to remedy the problems. I am eating less fast food which is probably a good thing!
In Iowa they’re actually hiring teens again- and we even loosened up the labor laws to make it so kids are allowed to work, sometimes!
Nothing worse than encountering a poorly trained teen with an attitude. Management/Owners don’t care as long as the $$ keep coming in. It’s been clear that productivity and work ethic has never recovered since Covid across hospitality, retail, corporations…
Mixed feelings for my part. While I rarely liked the food (and haven’t eaten at McD for years), for many teens of my 70s generation these were common first jobs. No skills required: just show up on time and work hard. My sister started as a waitress at Farrell’s (a long-defunct ice cream parlor) before she entered nursing school. I’ve met former students at Chik-filet and elsewhere. I started as a stockroom clerk for my chemistry department, but had many friends who were “grads” of McD, Burger King or wherever.
Sometimes it’s as if we have entered Potterville.
Bedford Falls seems like a distant dream.
The golden rule has been twisted.
• Do unto others before they do you in.
• Your happiness is all that matters.
• You are entitled to gains without effort.
If only the cashier’s would count back my change.
28 cents makes one, and four is five, and fifteen make 20….
Instead it’s a handful of bills and some coins thrown in. Smdh.
Fast food goes AI.
It’s already in progress in Japan, from what I’ve heard.
Two humanoids and a team of robots.
Where’s the beef indeed.
Tom- I remember when I was a teen (90’s), if you worked at a McD or KFC and applied for a post grad job, it was highly regarding on your CV. I don’t know that is still the case, as the training level, work ethic and level of customer experience expected by management of employees has dropped considerably. It’s also fair to say customers have become increasingly difficult. It’s a vicious cycle.
Tip jars: can we talk about this? All of a sudden they’re everywhere. The tip isn’t for bringing food to a table, clearing up, refilling drinks, explaining items… it’s for handing you a bag of food. Next, do we tip the grocery cashier? After pumping my own gas, do I tip the guy at the register? Am I supposed to tip the mailman, not just at Christmas but Every time I get a delivery? Recently my friend paid for a sandwich at the drive thru, and the young man held onto her change (several bucks) and said “should I just keep this for a tip?’ She laughed and said” how about just keep two dollars?” For handing her the BAG.
Also part of the problem. My son is a manager in a restaurant chain. After the lockdowns lifted, his restaurant went back to a later close time (I think they had moved it to about 6 or 7 during the lockdowns). I joked and said they had to keep up with the other restaurants I suppose. He laughed and told me most of the restaurants along the road where his is located are owned by the same corporation. What do they care? If you don’t like this one, and say you’ll go to the one down the street, chances are you’re still making the same ones at the top money one way or another. Something about that seems to suggest a lack of motivation to improve things when not improving things can make save so much money.
Agree, with one exception.
In New England you can’t drive 10 miles without seeing a Dunkin’ Donuts, and their employees hustle. Think it’s because of company & employee pride in how fast they can bring you a cup of coffee, stay organized and clean.
. (ps. for those in the mid west, it’s about the coffee not donuts).
Gave up fast food 15 years ago. I symapthize but there are worse things.
