News that I missed, courtesy of The Babylon Bee:
TOKYO — After a devastating and tragic surprise attack on Pearl Harbor, Japanese Emperor Hirohito has called for a ceasefire.
“The loss of life on both sides is a tragedy,” Hirohito said in a speech requesting an end to hostilities. “Now that we have pulverized the American naval fleet, we respectfully request that the United States look for ways to promote peace and not take any steps to retaliate until we attack you again. Thank you.”
American leaders had already begun talks to enter the war against the Axis Powers but were now bombarded with calls to engage in peace talks instead. “The timing of Japan’s request does seem a little suspicious,” said Captain Mike Rotunda, a United States Navy spokesman. “I mean, they literally asked for a ceasefire immediately after attacking us. It puts us in a weird position because that’s not really how ceasefires work.”
Segments of the American public pleaded with leaders to hold back on planning a counterattack and instead listen to Japanese calls for peace. “It would be immoral to strike back at Japan,” said one Congressman. “Yes, they just bombed America’s naval base. Yes, they seriously crippled our fleet. Yes, they killed over 2,000 Americans. But now they want peace, so we should totally believe them. It’s not like they would do anything sneaky.”
Go here to read the rest. What should we do King Theoden?
Coward. Knowing that his power of attorney will now be used against him, Hirohito publicly pleads for peace. Hirohito used America’s power of attorney to destroy us. Now it is time to use Hirohito’s power of attorney to stop his aggressive war.

The Emperor (who was always the creature of the militarists, as were nearly all Japanese sovereigns) had great misgivings about the Pacific War. There is a story that he was briefed in December 1941 by the army and navy high commands on the “glorious advances” Japanese forces were making. He famously asked: “And where do we stop?’
Reportedly, no one had an answer.
I think there is good evidence Tom that Hirohito was an enthusiast for the War until it went pearshaped on Japan:

Don:
No doubt, but no Emperor had been really in charge for centuries. Indeed, some histories I’ve read suggest no one person had supreme command in Japan’s Pacific War: that army and navy often went their own ways in their own theaters, which contributed to their weakness. Those are hallmarks of an oligarchic, not an autocratic society.
Sparing the Emperor led to peace and an alliance with Japan and the Japanese people that endures solidly to this day. Enduring justice is not always achieved by vengeance.
“but no Emperor had been really in charge for centuries.”
Untrue after the Meji Restoration under Hirohito’s grandfather which postulated a much stronger role for the Emperor. Hirohito’s Dad was nuts, but Hirohito played the role of Emperor per the precedent set by his grandfather. After Japan’s defeat there was a pretense that Hirohito had been only a figurehead, but that is far from the truth.
