The papal office, in the heated imagination of Leftist born again utramontanes, would be unrecognizable by most Catholics throughout the history of the Church. Peter is no Mormon Prophet, nor is he an infallible guide on matters outside of his charism. His primary role is to preach the Gospel and defend the traditional teachings of the Church. Activities much beyond that, particularly in reference to secular matters, are not shielded by his great office and the Pope stands alone as an individual man, and no Catholic need pay deference to the opinions of a man when he is acting clearly ultra vires beyond his office.

Why does the only pope to reject the title Vicar of Christ demand that we treat him as if he were Christ and not his steward?
If Christ were in Rome and giving airplane interviews and opining about the climate, I would listen in the manner of an ultramontane.
