I remember when Bill Gates was being touted as a sort of role model for kids with autism or Asperger Syndrome (which he allegedly has). But that was around the same time (mid-late 1990s) that Rosie O Donnell was the “Queen of Nice” and George Bush the Younger was the great conservative hope….

Elaine: you are correct, some things don’t age very well. That was around the same timeframe when Bill Clinton “felt our pain”.

His wife had him pegged right when she left though her politics are not much better.

Elaine,

I’ve noticed the reverse with Gates. While he was popular in the media in the 90’s, that was about it. In particular on the internet and in nerdier circles he was despised. See the movie “antitrust” for a good example of this view: in the movie a pretty thinly veiled Gates analogue ends up being a fraud, a thief, and an attempted murderer.

But since that time I’ve seen less Gates hate online and some nerds now love him for his “save the world with technology” ideas (read: makes sure that people in Africa don’t reproduce, give the clot shot to everyone and take over as much of the farming sector as he can.)

Since the 90s Gates has went from villain to Mr. Burns-esque quasi-supervillain, but he also has solidified his control over the media, and has done so for long enough that younger generations just accept him as an inevitable overlord. So the net effect is that his image somehow has improved over the years.

I don’t recall Gates was admired in popular discussion ca. 1995. I seem to recall the MAD magazine parody article where he was cut up for his body odor and his affection for his mother, the Douglas Coupland humor pieces where his bad temper and bad manners were featured, and the parody ads for Microsoft with the caption “Resistance is Futile”.

That rodent is on Epstein’s [he didn’t kill himself] client list – it’s keeping Ms. Maxwell alive.

“Political polarization” is free speech.

Real-life Ian Fleming super villains cannot survive the truth.

that Rosie O Donnell was the “Queen of Nice” and George Bush the Younger was the great conservative hope….

No clue who fancied George W Bush the ‘great conservative hope’, nor which publicist persuaded brain dead journalists who repeat ‘Queen of Nice’. Dame made a name for herself with a decidedly unpleasant stand-up act and would cut up her father to interviewers.

AD, I have the T-shirt: Gates as Borg, with “Resistance is Futile”. Don’t wear it often, because I don’t want to wear it out. Bought it years ago at an independent bookstore. Went back later to get one for a friend. They were no longer selling them. Some suits had come in and told them it would be in their best interest to cease and desist. Only amplified my opinion of Gates.

Around the time my daughter was diagnosed as autistic, and I first heard of Asperger Syndrome, Gates was being cited in (for lack of a better term) the “autism/Aspie community“ as an example of an Aspie who made good – proof that they could be successful in adult life. I didn’t mean to imply that he was universally admired. As for Rosie and Dubya, Rosie billed herself as the “Queen of Nice” when she had a short lived daytime talk show around 1996-97, in contrast to the sensationalist hosts like Jerry Springer and Jenny Jones; and Dubya was the “great conservative hope” in the general elections of 2000 and 2004, given that Al Gore and John Kerry were the alternatives.

O’Donnell’s show was on for six years. By some accounts it was Newsweek who dubbed her ‘the Queen of Nice’. It was a morning program with a female target audience, so I don’t know why it would have been considered novel that she was superficially pleasant. I think they always put the seedy stuff on in the late afternoon. Reporters are court stenographers at heart.

I seem to recall it was Andrew Sullivan’s recurrent kvetch that she didn’t make a public point of her lesbianism.

Turn from evil and do good,
that you may be settled forever.
For the LORD loves justice
and does not abandon the faithful.
When the unjust are destroyed,
and the offspring of the wicked cut off, The righteous will inherit the earth and dwell in it forever. Psalms 37: 27-29
