Historically Catholic soldiers and sailors recruited into the clergy were not uncommon. Growing up I knew several priests who served in World War II before going to the seminary.

There are quite a few former military who are priests in the Arlington VA diocese. Many of them after a parish assignment and with the bishop’s permission apply to the military ordinariate for a stint.
