Dune 2021

Third time the charm?  Almost certainly not, although it should be botched in different ways from prior efforts.  Looks like they are going to insert forced “humor”, a Neo-colonialist interpretation and a really annoying musical score.  How 2021 of them.  I will probably bite the bullet and see it in October and review it.  (Is it just me or does Paul Atreides look like the illegitimate son of Loki?)  As usual Frank Herbert will likely be whirring in his grave.

When the trailer lacks any “wow factor”, so goes the movie. Adding more and obvious political statements to a story from a novel already seeped in political messaging, seems like crazy overkill. Why are the movie renditions of Herbert’s work always so sterile and void of resonance, on any level? This latest seems more of the same.

Is Dune adaptable?

I’m loathe to say it’s impossible (I believe art is at its best when challenging the impossible) but it may very well be a story suited perfectly for its medium.

I knew the first movie would be a dud when they chose Toto to do the score. (My choice would have been Tangerine Dream, but I’m weird.)
