Saint of the Day Quote: Saint Maura

On an overgrown hill in the territory of Tours there were the tombs of two virgins, which were not venerated by the local inhabitants, though they were sometimes miraculously lit up at night. The virgins appeared in a dream to a local man, and asked him to build a cover over their tombs. He forgot their request, so they appeared for a second time and threatened him that he would die within the year if he did not carry out their wish. He built a stone oratory (oratorium) over the virgins’ tombs and asked Eufronius, bishop of Tours, to bless it. The bishop was reluctant because of his age and the harshness of the winter, but the virgins appeared to him and begged him to consecrate the oratory. So Eufronius travelled to bless it, the weather improving for the journey. He would later describe the virgins as they had appeared to him, and also recount how they had told him their names, Maura and Britta.
