Burn of the Day

Go here to read Bishop Martin’s talking points with brief commentary.  As he states, he would sooner have no ordinations than ordain men committed to the traditional Mass:

“Some have argued that this implementation sends a message that Charlotte is not a welcoming place for seminarians or prospective seminarians who feel a special attachment to the older form of the Mass. But we have been consistent and clear in this regard: any man who is only or primarily interested in the TLM has never been a viable candidate for ordination in this diocese.”

A wolf in shepherd’s clothes.

Bishop Martin’s talking points mention that his predecessor, Bishop Jurgis, had asked for and received from Rome a two-year deferral on suppressing the remaining TLMs in the diocese. The chancery’s “Talking Points” mention that the two-year extension ‘is expiring soon’ and Bishop Martin is merely bringing the diocese into compliance with Traditiones Custodes.

What His Excellency’s talking points fail to mention is the fact that the two-year extension Bishop Jurgis was granted doesn’t expire until early this October— yet Bishop Martin (for reasons unknown) has decreed that all parish TLMs are forbidden by early July.

Why the rush, Bishop Martin? I think it’s understandable that most people would conclude that His Excellency isn’t crushing his local Latin Mass communities only because Rome demands it— he’s doing it because he very much wants to, and would prefer to get rid of these second-class Catholics now and not run the risk of a new Pope overturning Traditiones Custodes and leaving him without a good pretext.

“But we have been consistent and clear in this regard: any man who is only or primarily interested in the TLM has never been a viable candidate for ordination in this diocese.”

Spoken as if he hated the deposit of Faith itself! Worse than belligerent. The viable candidates have been interiorly called by Our Savior. If you dare to tread on His work you are anti-christ, not a Bishop of His Holy Church.

Answer?
To do penance for your sins against Unity.

Ok.
After you Bishop.
You start.
Let’s see you pray for unity.

After reading this post I will have to recant my previous messages regarding obedience to this bishop. His words boarder on rage.

May his poison pen reward him.

Smh.

He might as well said that we don’t need priests at all. The future of Christ’s Church is nothing more than a drive thru. A dairy queen
dispensing words on a napkin and biscuts, and at a feverish pace.

The second class Catholics will survive and flourish because of these brutes.

As a former submarine sailor, I offer Bishop Martin our famed one finger salute. This idea of being docile and obedient to bullies has got to stop.

A cruel thug. But this is the type Francis attracted and rewarded.
I pray Pope Leo thinks better of the TLM but I’m not so optimistic about that now.

Wait a minute, is the author of above the Fr. Martin and he has been made a bishop? Did the late Francis upgrade him? If so this is scurrilous!!
The Latin Mass was celebrated on the day of or day after Pope Leo XIV at the church where Pope Francis is buried.

This bishop hasn’t gotten the word.

No TLM, then no money goes to the diocese.

Will Bishop Martin preach on Pope Leo’s recent sermon on “same sex marriage”?

And what a beautiful, clear teaching Pope Leo the XIV gave. Thank you for the link.

As I may have mentioned before, we can expect Leo XIV (vivat!) to be something in the mold of John Paul II: there is attachment to traditional Catholicism here and there, but the overall understanding of the Church and the Faith is that we have passed an unalterable watershed (Vatican II, naturally), which has changed the Church and the expression of the Faith in ways that cannot now be reversed.

One aspect of that view of the Church is that the Pope is something of an equal to his cardinals. He will go along with appointments, so long as they are not blatantly scandalous–even if there are strong rumors of misbehavior, etc.

He may restore a moderate freedom to the old Mass, but he will feel obliged to continue the overall stance of his predecessor.

Remember, as bad as Bp. Martin might be, John Paul II elevated Bernardin and gave him the red hat (and Mahoney, and Weakland, and so forth). Pray for better times!

For what it is worth…..Bishop Martin is a Franciscan. With Martin’s appointment, the Conventual Franciscans became the most represented religious community among the active bishops of the United States.

Eh, I could be wrong, yet I could swear that Traditionis forbade creating a new parish for the purpose of offering the traditional Mass. Yet, …here they seem to be doing precisely that. They seem to be using the excuse of it being a chapel, one formerly used by Presbyterians.

Wait. They’re having the traditional Mass set up shop in a chapel. ..In a chapel…. I could swear that this is essentially what SSPX has been doing since 1988? Building or renovating something, however “parish-sized” it may be, and offering sacraments?
Doesn’t this inherently cause SSPX to be in communion with Rome?

I’m hoping someone has a REALLY good explanation about the difference between a chapel and a parish that can make sense of this….

(I also posted these comments on Fr Zs blog.)

Do not expect clarity. Making a mess is the goal and a feature.

If sense *could* be applied, the proper argument would be:
One dead pope (Francis) says limit the TLM per my instructions. Another dead pope (Benedict) says the TLM ought not to be limited. How can you say one dead pope is more worthy of obedience than another?
How did we get to a point where my life would *improve* if most of the bishops and their staff were indefinitely unavailable????

You guys should read Pope Leo XIV’s various speeches and homilies at the Vatican’s web site. Every other paragraph he is quoting and lauding Pope Francis.

LQC, Recommend only reading statements now as Leo. The pope is now a new man of his own, and I suspect that past statements were modified by a desire to be in synch but that has likely changed.

I wonder if Fr. James Martin will comment on Pope Leo’s latest sermon on “same sex marriage”?
In spirit of synodality of course.

Pope Leo XIV is not a dumb man. While he may be more in touch with Peru and the Curia, he cannot possibly be ignorant of the Church in the USA.

The Vatican’s financial situation is a mess. I can’t be the only American to submit a one fingered salute to Peter’s Pence over the past dozen years. The Holy Father NEEDS us to avoid a financial collapse. TC was a horrid motu proprio. It singled out a small but dedicated and growing group of Catholics for punishment who did nothing wrong.

Either TC is reversed or the vacuum created by Jorge Bergoglio will be filled by the SSPX. Rest assured, if the eventual successor to Bishop Zubik in the Diocese of Pittsburgh ever gave the boot to the ICKSP (Zubik will not as Zubik invited the ICKSP and Canon Talarico is from Pittsburgh) all of us will take our $10K plus weekly donations to St. James Parish in the West End of Pittsburgh.

The huge church the SSPX built in St. Mary’s, Kansas ought to be a precursor of things to come. TC (Traditiones Confiscatus) is an impediment. It is not the end of Catholic Tradition. It already is the end of these Catholics providing one red cent to any Catholic diocese, charity or the Vatican.

Bishop Martin is an imbecile. It would cost him nothing to invite the FSSP or the ICKSP to the Diocese of Charlotte. I have no patience with imbecile prelates.

There are plenty of shuttered church buildings in cities across the USA that could be converted to the TLM. I believe the SSPX in Jacksonville acquired one such closed Catholic Church.

There are many options for His Holiness to solve this mess. Trashing TC is a mandatory step. Setting up the FSSP and or the ICKSP as an ordinariate with their own Bishops and freedom to establish parishes independent of the local ordinary is worth consideration and could be an improvement on Summorum Pontificum. An honest sit down with the SSPX and an examination of their grievances with VII ( they do not hate the whole thing, just a few certain parts of it) is needed.

If His Holiness wants to have discussions with the Orthodox, the best way to earn trust is to acknowledge the cruel heavy hand given to the Eastern Catholics ( Alexis Toth, the schism caused in the Ruthenian Church in the 1920s and 1930s) and the nasty way the Trads have been treated.

Someone should remind the good Bishop that we’ll just wait until he’s dead to implement the proper reforms. The trad crowd is a younger crowd.
