Christ guaranteed His Church survival and final rescue. Individual men, not so much.
The most sensible parts of Catholic theology (as opposed to Protestant imitations) is that the gates of Hell *can* prevail against an individual, often do, but can be restored through the Christ established sacrament of confession.
The “doctrine” of once saved, always saved earned ruthless criticism from me in my godless youth and helped to keep me arms length from Our Lord for a long time. Don’t let people tell you doctrine doesn’t matter. Serious converts look for substance. It’s one of the reasons why hypocrisy and triviality by the clergy is so frustrating to me. I know that, somewhere, a potential convert has used those actions to convince themselves to remain at arms length one more day.
Dr. McClung, I offer the clerics of the Vatican the one finger submarine sailor salute. The Chicoms can make due with being on the receiving end of Mark-48 torpedos. 😉
