It has been my contention for some time that as long as Ted McCarrick is still alive, they need someone who is going to keep things covered in DC. I actually thought McElroy was going to be the guy back when Wuerl resigned, but they put in Gregory, figuring they’d eventually turn to McElroy. And they have. Omerta is absolutely the right analogy here.

Janet Smith(whom I respect immensely for Contraception Why Not?) has an article over at Lifesite:
“Consider another extremely perplexing action by the Catholic Church. The aforementioned Cardinal McElroy, who protected a confessed, convicted ritual rapist, will be installed as the archbishop of Washington, D.C. Why him? Why a bishop known for covering for the infamous sexual abuser McCarrick and others?“

“ Five individuals, myself among them, have written an open letter to Vice President Vance to advocate for a RICO investigation into how the USCCB had used the funds entrusted to it. I have worked as an advocate for Rachel Mastrogiacomo, among several other victims, for five years.”
The lavender mafia is scared.

McCarrick is 94 years old. He’s been laicized, but supposedly there are houses of men religious who have been willing to take care of him. (His closest relatives I’ve been able to identify are 1st cousins in his general age range). By some accounts, he’s a normal range man of 94 – i.e. demented. I’m not sure what danger he could represent in his current state.

McElroy, et. al., including those who have helped install him in DC, have no issue with what McCarrick did with seminarians or they would have objected to him long before he himself got to DC. They only tossed him overboard after accusations began to include minors.

In the article, McElroy consistently objects that he could not act because it was all hearsay evidence. Police investigate in hearsay evidence all the time. Yes, more is needed for action, but certainly not for investigation.
God knows the truth of it and His justice will not wait forever, but as I understand it, the offer of forgiveness expires when he does. I pray he makes whatever peace is necessary if his go along to get along is a milestone around his neck.

My understanding is that sodomy was taught as not sinful in the seminaries across America. (Michael Rose: Goodbye Good Men).
Sodomy is not sexual. Sodomy is assault and battery; a prosecutable crime against people coerced into the abuse.
McElroy is a scandal to all. Millstones all around.

The annual prayer breakfast in Washington next year should be a most interesting gathering. Even more interesting will be the comments of the attendees. Wonder if the good Cardinal can handle it.

Don-
My language was imprecise. I was not trying to give McElroy an out because of hearsay, or imply that there should be no Church or secular investigation.
Thank you for telling me that sometimes hearsay is admissible. It would especially seem to make a difference in abuse cases, where physical evidence is scant to begin with- and often nonexistent after the passage of years.
