By “French” he means the Ile de France dialect, which spread throughout the country in the early modern period because it was the language of judicial proceedings.

Not sure the dialects of the Langue d’Oil were mutually unintelligible, nor the dialects of the Langue d’Oc.

Interesting.

It’s amazing how French and French culture has survived in Quebec. The Catholic Church had a lot to do with Quebec not being culturally absorbed by its Anglo surroundings.

Too bad the French have turned their backs on the Catholic heritage which has allowed them to withstand British Protestant domination…

Radio, television, internet does kill dialect.
So does government action.

There should be no argument of either/or. As men are slain by arrows AND bullets, so dialect can have two threats, or more…

It might also be pointed out that they were all speaking a bastardized form of Latin, they just codified the bastardization 🤣

The Roman Empire – now that was a dialect killer.

I suppose so.
Still, it’s amazing how here in the south we have easily recognized regional accents: Alabamian (for sure), south Georgian, the Virginia drawl, the South Carolina “mumble-drawl” (I just made that up), etc., etc. Accents aren’t dialects, I know, but they’re pretty much all we’ve got in the U.S. of A.

No dialect, Fr J?

Whaddya call a sandwich on a long roll?🥖

What’s a nonalcohololic carbonated sugary drink called?

What’s a winter hat called?

What is the proper term for a vehicle consisting of a cab and trailer?

Okay… so there isn’t a lot left, but enough to occasionally baffle somebody who moves from East Coast to the Midwest!
