If God chose Jorge the Heretic, then the choice is punishment for a wicked and idolatrous generation.
Precisely – for chastisement’s sake.
I would think, though, that if we take the proper lesson from this era, it ought to be a reminder of clarity of speech (and thought) and “let your yes mean yes”, etc. But fallen man has a wonderful mechanism of avoiding the plain lessons right in front of him.

This guy calls himself a Thomist, but I don’t recall the Angelic Doctor claiming that God chooses popes. Divine Providence doesn’t work that way. Someone please correct me if I am mistaken on that point.
“Meta Thomist” should review his history of the Popes. God permitted evil men to become Pope: John XII, killed by his mistress’ husband, springs to mind. And of course Benedict XI, who committed simony by selling the papacy to his godfather. And then there were the Borgias…
