Throughout most of the history of the Church, the Pope was rarely the great figure within the Church. For example, few popes were greater as to their impact on their world than Innocent III. Yet his reign is remembered chiefly due to Saint Francis of Assisi, and the support the Pope gave his mission to rebuild the Church. Returning to such an understanding might be healthy for the Church.

Agreed. The ultramontanists are a reaction to the secular world’s assault on the faith and so long as an Innocent III or a John Paul II were capable champions for the faith it worked. It breaks down when a man like Julius II or Francis becomes that secular ruler. We don’t need a champion against the world, but rather a man who is for the Church.
Rebuilding the Church.
Our little parish had been granted permission to have TLM Now I fear that time is running out, since Baltimore’s Archbishop Lori broke the news to his flock. Suppression on the way.
Here is the kick in the gut;
The purpose of the indult was to allow those who had become accustomed to Mass according to the Missal of 1962 to receive catechesis and formation so they would come to welcome and embrace the Novus Ordo,” the archbishop wrote.
I’ll post the article in a moment.
….. to receive formation… via the ordo… oh my goodness.

I hadn’t realized that William Lori, after his scandalous performance in Connecticut, was now in Baltimore. Twenty years ago, an eccentric traditionalist priest told me the contemporary episcopacy was ‘like the masons. You don’t rise unless you commit a crime/’.
The bishop of Rome is but a shadow of his predecessors and this strong Prince of the Church.
Philip-
Baltimore?
I understand Baltimore is to be (clumsily) pruned by the powers that (shouldn’t) be.
Condolences in these hard times.
TBO
Condolences…. not yet.
Our parish is in Michigan.
I wonder about this edict from the powers that shouldn’t be hitting all of diocese of America.
Even if it happens it won’t be for long… I hope.
I’ve heard second or third hand (so take it with a grain of salt) that a number of parishioners at St Mary’s in Hagerstown would refuse to go to adoration if the host was consecrated at a novus order mass. That’s unfortunately the sort of thing that gives fuel to those trying to shut down the TLM.
Mike S.
If that is true then I would agree with you.
Jesus is present in the Ordo and TLM.
A hastily done liturgy of the Eurchrist in the Ordo is as poor as a fumbling mismanaged TLM.
As long as the form, matter and prayers are correct Jesus Christ is present to us in Holy Communion.
To see our altar servers, male only, from 8 years to 17 years old, is an authentic sign of Hope for new vocations to the priesthood.
As proven by our leadership to religious life in the diocese. Could it be that these young men who serve the TLM and have perpetual Eurchristic adoration available, are hearing the call because of the deep end holy respect our Lord is given in the TLM?
Gee…. go figure that one out.
My convictions are strong because I see the results.
To throw a cold blanket on the TLM is suicide.
I have occasionally encountered some distain by TLM folks about the NO. I have encountered much more abuse of dogma and Our Lord’s Real Presence in the NO.
Only one of these gets corrected by Rome, though.
I don’t know how big the Hagerstown parish was, but the Baltimore location is a fully functioning parish with great attendance. It’s downtown, but not in the worst part of town. The trads may be better off than most – the Archdiocese is talking about closing more than half the parishes.
The downtown FSSP parish in Baltimore is great, and they have a solid relationship with Archbishop Lori. He’s joined them for a number of liturgical celebrations which is why I’m not ready to attribute the St Mary’s decision to any sort of hatred of the TLM.
