The Best of Simulations Publications, Inc.

The core of my game collection are SPI games from the seventies.  They, along with Avalon Hill, were the time machines disguised as paper games that I have always loved.  Here are some that I love in no particular order:

American Civil War- From Strategy&Tactics 43-the first of the strategic board games, at least the first with any pretense to historical reality, on The Late Unpleasantness;

A Mighty Fortress-The first game on the Protestant Reformation.

Dixie-From S&T 54.  One of the few SPI forays into alternate history, positing Confederate independence with subsequent 20th century wars.

After the Holocaust-Rebuilding the US after a nuclear war, the game was hurt by the math involved.  Would make a great computer game.

Acre-A detailed look of the siege of Acre by Richard the Lionheart in 1191.

Battle for Germany-From S&T 50.  Clever game with one player commanding the Soviets and the Germans in the West, and the other player commanding the Western Allies and the Germans in the East.

Thirty Years War Quad-A four game look at four battles of that conflict.  Simple rules and low counter count still managed to give a good period feel.

The Fall of Rome-From S&T 39.  One of the first of the solitaire games, with the player attempting to forestall the fall of the Roman Empire.

Invasion America-A Communist dominated world invades the USA.  Followed in 1980 by Objective Moscow, a monster game which posited an invasion of the Soviet Union by NATO, China and Japan.

I could go on and on, but this was not supposed to be an inventory of my SPI games.

I have several SPI games in my collection, too. Objective: Moscow, Invasion America, World War III, After the Holocaust, Time Tripper and John Carter: Warlord of Mars.

Some great stuff from the mind of Dunnigan & Co.
