The plan was always thus:
Stage 1: Use free speech to destabilize traditional institutions.
Stage 2: Now that the institutions are destabilized, fill them with your own people. Shamelessly use accusations “hate speech” as a means to pick off the remaining old guard members.
Stage 3: Now that YOU control institutions, completely clamp down on free speech to prevent anyone from using the same tactics that you did.
A lot of the dems upset about the new face of the party thought that Stage 1 would go on forever. But it was always meant to end this way.
I think you’re crediting people with all too much foresight.
It’s been increasingly plain for more than sixty years now that the capacity of academic institutions and the media to function as a forum for competing viewpoints has been decaying and the people responsible for these institutions have seen a secular decline in their capacity to argue. Well, whose passions are manifest in the Democratic Party. One adjustment to this situation was talk radio, another was the Murdochs’ commercial ventures, and another was blog commentary. You listen to partisan Democrats in fora like this and you discover they’re enraged by this even though they consume very little starboard media and can only caricature the opposition. Well, a lot of these types collected in gatekeeper positions in commercial companies and are now in the business of attempting to sabotage others.
Our problem, really, is that you have a scatter of lone wolves like Krysten Sinema and Bari Weiss and Alan Dershowitz, but most of the opposition consists of loosely-wired people led by chronic liars.

This could be a contradiction. It’s quite possible that the Venn diagram of planners/leaders and actors doesn’t intersect. RH’s observation is correct. The question is whether it’s organic or organized.
