Go here to read the article by Elizabeth Scalia. OSV has always been a lickspittle rag to those in power at the Vatican. No surprise.
Our Sunday Violator
- Donald R. McClarey
Donald R. McClarey
Cradle Catholic. Active in the pro-life movement since 1973. Father of three, one in Heaven, and happily married for 43 years. Small town lawyer and amateur historian. Former president of the board of directors of the local crisis pregnancy center for a decade.
They lost me in 2008 when their new, young editor wrote that it was okay to vote for Obama.
I think part of the problem is that they were taken over years ago by social justice Catholics who leaned this way. Think Mark Shea lite. They are just as radicalized but less acerbic.
Oh great, I used to like Elizabeth Scalia’s “Anchoress” columns, but it seems like just about every Catholic media outlet, columnist or blogger I used to enjoy reading is ending up on the s***list.
The late, great Kathy Schaidle worked for OSV for about a nanosecond in 2007. She quit after OSV refused to run a column by her criticizing Earth Day.
Thankfully, in this age of digital content, one can almost always look at prior works by the writer or publication. In this way we are able to determine where they rate on the bullsh!tometer 🙂
Of course, a well formed moral compass comes in handy too!

I mentioned earlier that I was kind of obsessed with this Outreach conference. I’ve only watched a bit of it online so far, but it has exactly the kind of problem I was worried about. The group seeks to be an umbrella organization for alphabet groups. But those groups can be orthodox or profoundly separate from the Faith. If I were a gay Catholic I could probably find a good circle of support, but not if I treated everyone as equally orthodox and qualified.
Also, based on the little I’ve seen, the message seems to be not merely “you are loved”, but “you are prophetic”. That’s a message that could twist even the best and brightest person. We need “God loves you despite the fact that you’re a creep” sermons, no matter what our orientation.
