You don’t like her, my mother don’t like her, she’s a dog and I’m a fat, ugly man! Well, all I know is I had a good time last night! I’m gonna have a good time tonight! If we have enough good times together, I’m gonna get down on my knees and I’m gonna beg that girl to marry me! If we make a party on New Year’s, I got a date for that party. You don’t like her? That’s too bad!
Marty (1955), screenplay
Ernest Borgnine gave the performance of his career as the eponymous hero of the film Marty, a goodhearted, thirty-four year old butcher, seemingly doomed, much against his wishes, to being a life long bachelor. Then one night he meets his female equivalent Clara (Betsy Blair), a twenty-nine year old science teacher, who is weeping because her blind date stood her up. They hit it off immediately and two lonely hearts suddenly come alive with hope.  It is a love story told simply with humor and drama, the way that real life works. The film is now on YouTube and it has my strong recommendation.
