Washington was ever a slave to duty, but I can almost see him doing this, as much as he loved his life at Mount Vernon, with his presiding over the Constitutional Convention being his last public duty. Result: The clash between Federalists and Republicans is speeded up almost a decade. We do not have the relatively peaceful Washington two terms. Washington does not set the precedents for how a President should act or not act. Those who opposed the new Constitution are confirmed in their beliefs as the new Federal government becomes a scene of unrestrained wild partisanship. Of course until his death Washington could have spoken out, but having made the Great Refusal I doubt he would have. We would have been lucky to avoid a civil war in the 1790s. God gave us George Washington just when we needed him, and Washington, greatly against his private inclinations, stayed in harness until the country could barely get along without him.
“Washington was ever a slave to duty”
Duty is never slavery to those who know what they are doing…like fighting for freedom and civl rights,.. God-given civil rights for all men. Washington would and is out there with Father Frank Pavone trying to establish the truth that all men are created (not born) equal in sovereign personhood.
And like Abraham Lincoln, Washington is proving that one man cannot own another man. The Civil War could not have been won on the evil that one man can own another man. No monarch can own his subjects.
Only “their Creator” can own any man and our God has set mankind free. The Declaration of Independence.
Mary De Voe
Duty is never slavery to those who know what they are doing
Quite the opposite Mary, as almost all men who have fought in wars would tell you.
I reluctantly agree as I had Washington in mind and General George Patten. And after Pearl Harbor the men and women volunteered; laid their lives down as statesmen.
For drafted men, duty was slavery. The sovereign person became Government Issue.
For the men who volunteered, they were the Government.
Thanks Donald
I am still waiting to have the comment of the week. But then again, I am still waiting for the Medal of Freedom. After the Nobel Peace Prize was given to Obama. I would not have it. Some self-respect in old age.
Thanks again.
Oh, Donald:
Add Father Frank Pavone to my list.
