Patriot Presidents

Adams and Jefferson died within a few hours of each other on July 4, 1826, fifty years since the Declaration of Independence was announced to the world.  James Monroe would die on July 4, 1831, the 55th anniversary of the Declaration.  He was the last President to have fought in the Continental Army.  Andrew Jackson as a young teenager served with American militia during the War, and suffered a saber cut on his forehead and left hand when as a prisoner of war he refused to polish a British officer’s boots.  Both his older brothers and his mother would die as a result of their service in the War, Jackson’s father having died in a logging accident in 1767, shortly before Jackson’s birth.  Jackson was the last veteran of the American Revolution to serve as President.
