Former Prime Minister Shinzo Abe’s assassination is a nightmare for China.   A staunch conservative, Abe’s goal was for Japan to take its rightful place in the world and to stand militarily against the threat from China.  His murder ensures that these goals will be carried out.

I do hope Japan can pull itself together. It is not enough to simply change the Constitution; in order to have a miltary, they need soldiers, which take a good 17 to 22 years to make as it were. Their birthrate is among the lowest in the world.

From your words to Gods ears Donald.

Shinzo Abe fought to rebuild Japan as a western ally with a strong sense of patriotic nationalism. Japan’s technological advancements and potential are rivalled by few nations (Germany is up there, as is Isreal and US). China copy- they don’t innovate.

Abe also wanted Japan to be forgiven for the role it played in WW2. Japan deserved to be forgiven. However, whilst Japan and Germany were punished and its military activities restricted and monitored for decades, the world took its eyes off China and its military and economic growing power, as well as it’s alliances with the likes of Russia and Iran. There is a lesson to be learnt here. But it won’t be learned if the majority of world governments currently lean to the left.

Nations can’t always rely on the US military to protect their sovereignty. For example, Australia’s DF is around 60,000 active. It really should be 600,000.

Also, I suspect time will tell that Abe’s murder was not an act of a lone crazed gunman but rather a political assassination disguised as a random attack. China, North Korea…? Who knows.

DJH: There is more work to be done. A number of Asian countries still have a certain animosity toward Japan for their actions in WW II. China, in particular, is not reluctant to note that they lost a greater number of people than the rest of the warring countries combined. Japan will need a strong leader with good political skills to go forward with what Abe began.

Donald L: “There is more work to be done”

The first would be to restore? rebuild? the Japanese family. Actually, most Western nations (and China too) have this problem. And that is going to take a lot of work. I have my doubt that any government is truly up to that task
