PopeWatch: And Lucy Snatches the Football Just Before Charlie Brown Kicks It

This Pope would rather chew glass than do anything that would be praised by traditional Catholics.

If you say white, he says black. If you say black, he says white. He’s just one of those personalities.

Our Lady made a simple, straightforward request. It takes an astonishing hubris to decide that her request was somehow in need of ‘improvement’.

Instead of appointing himself Editor-in-Chief to the Blessed Virgin, Francis should just recall the sage advice of Marshall Field and “Give the lady what she wants”.

I hear you, Clinton … But didn’t he also decide that the Lord’s Prayer needed improvement a while back? This Pope is really something!

Reminds me of a friend–ex-Catholic, and now fully embracing the local protestant church. He says it’s great, except (I kid you not) that he would like to do some rewriting of the Bible. God made us in His image and ever since we’ve been trying to remake Him into our image…and I’m afraid that arrogance has also slipped into Rome as of late.

Well, so much for the hope that this regrettable Pope might actually do something Catholic and mean it.
This comment made to readers, prior to the walk-back, by the editor of Christian Order Magazine remains relevant, however:
“Apropos the Consecration itself, let us hope that just this once in his 9-year pontificate Francis does not flatter to deceive (CO passim). And should his act prove acceptable to Heaven, that it might also effect his own conversion of heart, mind and soul, and his miraculous return to the Faith of our Fathers, for all our sakes.”

Derelictions have consequences. In this case, consequences for the world and the souls in it. Lord make haste to save us.

Everything must have his deranged stamp upon it. He requires a serious intervention. He is emotionally, intellectually and morally unbalanced.

I don’t understand. Why do you call this man pope? Actual popes must be actually Catholic. Yet if there’s anything this vile man has made crystal clear, it’s that he hates actual Catholicism with the white-hot hatred of a thousand burning suns. How then can he possibly be an actual pope, since he isn’t an actual Catholic? One cannot be the head of a body of which one is not a member.

Note that recognizing that he can’t possibly be an actual pope because he isn’t an actual Catholic doesn’t require any legal authority; it simply involves the capacity and willingness to recognize reality, the reality spitting in our faces daily.

I’m not sure what to make of this. I understand the significance of the Russia consecration and would like to see it done in an unquestionably effective manner. But didn’t Sister Lucia herself say the 1984 consecration by Pope JPII “counted”? And I don’t believe Our Lady prescribed the exact formula to be used. It certainly can’t do any harm to do it again, but that said, some of the agonizing I see on other (more trad leaning) forums seems to treat the Fatima request as if it were a cosmic game of Simon Says or Mother May I, in which getting just one word wrong scuttles everything and renders billions of prayers over the last century moot. I just don’t think that approach does any honor to Our Lady or her Son. As long as Russia is explicitly consecrated to the Immaculate Heart, by intention of the pope, I’d think that would suffice.
