Continuing our Advent look at Messianic prophecies, a series which we began in Advent 2011 and continued each year subsequently, and the earlier posts of the series may be read here, we come to Isaiah 28: 16:
Therefore thus saith the Lord God, Behold, I lay in Zion for a foundation a stone, a tried stone, a precious corner stone, a sure foundation: he that believeth shall not make haste.
Isaiah 28: 16
In 1 Peter, Saint Peter writes of this passage:
[6] Wherefore it is said in the scripture: Behold, I lay in Sion a chief corner stone, elect, precious. And he that shall believe in him, shall not be confounded. [7] To you therefore that believe, he is honour: but to them that believe not, the stone which the builders rejected, the same is made the head of the corner: [8] And a stone of stumbling, and a rock of scandal, to them who stumble at the word, neither do believe, whereunto also they are set.
In writing this Peter merely echoes what Christ had said about Himself:
[42] Jesus saith to them: Have you never read in the Scriptures: The stone which the builders rejected, the same is become the head of the corner? By the Lord this has been done; and it is wonderful in our eyes.
Matthew 21: 42
[10] And have you not read this scripture, The stone which the builders rejected, the same is made the head of the corner:
[11] By the Lord has this been done, and it is wonderful in our eyes.
Mark 12: 10-11
[17] But he looking on them, said: What is this then that is written, The stone, which the builders rejected, the same is become the head of the corner?
Luke 20:17
The thing about modernity that I despise is people believe they have to “update” everything, including classic Christmas carols or put a modern “spin” on them as if they can’t speak to one’s heart as they were written and known.
Amen, Elaine. Also the Sacred Liturgy (Novus Ordo, anyone?) and Sacred Scripture itself. (The NAB. Case closed.) None of it was necessary. Now the Modernists seek to destroy completely that which they hate. (E.g, the ironically entitled “Traditiones Custodes.”)
There I go again.
