Any well established agricultural area is going to naturally develop businesses to support the farming enterprises. Animals require some sort of veterinarians. Wheat requires mills. Slaughter houses. Grain bins. A legal system to resolve boundary disputes and to handle probate matters. Weavers to make cloth. Grocers to sell the produce of the farms. Teamsters. Bakers. Seed salesmen. Carpenters. Taverns. Churches. Funeral Homes. Hospitals. The list could go on at great length. Each supporting business tends to generate other supporting businesses, and the populations to run these businesses and their families produce economic needs which must be met by other businesses. Land is the foundation of a complicated economic system.
A rural county may seem like bucolic simplicity to passers by, but actually there is always the hum of economic activity, many individuals playing several roles in the economic life of the community.
