Oldspeak – Chinese Virus

George Orwell spent his life exposing the evil essence of totalitarianism and the evil of those people who employed its methods to obtain, maintain, and increase political power. In 1949 he published his dystopian novel, Ninenteen-Eighty-Four (“NEF”) in which the rulers, collectively “The Party,” used many techniques and methods to destroy any belief in individual liberty and to imprison or liquidate anyone who dared to express any opinion or belief contrary to the Party’s stated version of reality. A primary tool of the power people of the Party was the manipulation and corruption of language.

The Party presents to the public a dictator, whom no one ever encounters personally, the “Benefactor,” the “Big Brother” who exists in everyone’s daily life via the ubiquitous “telescreens.” The “Guardians,” who are also unseen and anonymous as far as the public is concerned, are Big Brother’s puppet masters. Using the omnipresent screens that are everywhere, both in public and in private, Big Brother is the mouthpiece for the Party’s Guardians.

Big Brother conveys the concepts of “Doublethink” in the Party’s manipulated language, “Newspeak.” At the core of this totalitarian misuse of language were the Party’s belief that, like God almighty, they could bring reality into existence simply by saying words and thus they could distort events and use them for purposes of maintaining power by calling a thing something other than what it really is.

A major factor in this abuse of language was the party’s implicit proclamation that what the Party said was infallible and that anyting expressed in contradiction of the party dogma was heresy. And, of course, anyone stating such heresy was a heretic, an enemy of the state, and subject to torture, imprisonment , andr execution.

Winston, the anti-hero of NEF, works at the “Ministry of Truth” – literally changing historical records and photographs to reflect the current lies of the Guardians, and then he sometimes changes history again back to what it had been previously. Eventually, there is no public access to what the past had really been.

Orwell knew that language structures and, in some ways, limits human thought, He presented the totalitarians as realizing that their Ministry of Truth could, hopefully, make it impossible for any person to conceive, or even imagine, a dissident, disobedient or religious thought. This is the basis for the Party’s new language, “Newspeak” which was to replace English. Once enforced, Newspeak would make it impossible, truly impossible, for anyone to think or conceive anything that would contradict or question the party’s absolute power.

In Newspeak words like honor, justice, morality, liberty, equality, democracy and religion were purged and the use of such words was described as “crimethink.”

The theoretic underpinnings of Newspeak is the doctrine of “Doublethink:”

To know and not to know, to be conscious of complete truthfulness while telling carefully constructed lies, to hold simultaneously two opinions which cancelled out, knowing them to contradictory and believing in both of them, to use logic against logic, to repudiate morality while laying claim to it, to believe that democracy was impossible and that the Party was the guardian of democracy, to forget whatever it was necessary to forget, then draw it back into memory again at the moment when it was needed, and then promptly to forget it again: and above all, to apply the same process to the process itself. That was the ultimate subtlety: consciously to induce unconsciousness, and then, once again, to become unconscious of the act of hypnosis you had just performed. Even to understand the word ‘doublethink’ involved the use of doublethink.” [NEF pp. 31-2]

Newspeak employs many, many abbreviations, and Orwell noted that English was already being corrupted by politicians and other power people by the use of a whole new language of abbreviations that did not make people think of the horrors, crimes and evil of totalitarians in power. As examples, he mentioned these abbreviations: Nazi, Gestapo, Komintern, Inprecorr, and Agitprop.

Orwell states the goals of the totalitarian implementation of Newspeak;

Don’t you see that the whole aim of Newspeak is to narrow the range of thought? In the end we shall make thoughtcrime literally impossible, because there will be no words in which to express it. Every concept that can ever be needed will be expressed by exactly one word, with its meaning rigidly defined and all its subsidiary meanings rubbed out and forgotten. […] Every year fewer and fewer words, and the range of consciousness always a little smaller. Even now, of course, there’s no reason or excuse for committing thoughtcrime. It’s merely a question of self-discipline, reality-control. But in the end there won’t be any need even for that. […] In fact there will be no thought, as we understand it now. Orthodoxy means not thinking – not needing to think. Orthodoxy is unconsciousness.’ ” [NEF pp. 45-6]

A Party member, O’Brien, states the “why” of the Party members’ evil will to power:

The Party seeks power entirely for its own sake. We are not interested in the good of others; we are interested solely in power. […] Power it not a means, it is an end.” [NEF p. 211] . . .If you want a picture of the future, imagine a boot stamping on a human face – for ever.” [NEF p. 215]

Those who do not speak Newspeak are hounded out by the “Thought Police” who have telescreens everywhere, in every public area and in every home, in addition to hidden microphones and an army of informers and spies for catching not only “thought criminals” but those who potentially could be thought criminals committing “thoughtcrime” that would imperil the infallibility and sanctity of the Party. The spies and informers included children who, from birth, were brainwashed to recognize and then report thought criminals, including their parents, and any suspected thought criminal.

United States Patent 10,905,790 February 2, 2021

Coronaviruses (CoV) are widespread viruses that cause a variety of illnesses ranging from the common cold to COVID-19. Coronaviruses are lipid-bilayer enveloped positive-sense, single-stranded RNA virus, and a member of the Coronaviridae family. Coronaviruses have club-shaped spikes that project from their substantial spherical surface.

A new coronavirus, designated SARS-CoV-2, has ravaged the world since 2019. This virus first jumped into humans in Wuhan, Hubei Province, China, and then quickly spread across the world. COVID-19 represents a global public health concern and WHO has declared it a public health emergency. SARS-CoV-2 rapidly increased in spread in an epidemic scale since its first appearance in Wuhan, China, around December 2019. On Jan. 31, 2020, the Secretary of HHS issued a declaration of public health emergency related to COVID-19.”

United States Patent 10,906,944 February 2, 2021

Coronaviruses (CoV) are enveloped viruses with a positive-stranded RNA genome. In 2002, there was an outbreak of severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS) in Asia. In 2003, a novel coronavirus was identified to be the causative agent of SARS and subsequently named SARS-CoV. During the 2002-2003 outbreak, SARS-CoV infected over 8000 people with about 10% fatality rate. In 2012, another coronavirus, Middle East respiratory syndrome coronavirus (MERS-CoV), was identified. Since 2012, MERS-CoV has infected over 2000 people in 27 countries with about 35% fatality rate. In December 2019, a novel coronavirus designated as 2019-nCoV (or SARS-CoV-2) appeared in Wuhan, China. The first reported infected individuals, some of whom showed symptoms as early as December 8, were discovered to be among stallholders from the Wuhan South China Seafood Market. On Jan. 10, 2020, gene sequencing determined that this novel coronavirus, a beta-coronavirus, is related to the MERS-CoV and the SARS-CoV. On Jan. 30, 2020, the WHO declares SARS-CoV-2 a public health emergency of international concern (PHEIC), and on Mar. 11, 2020, characterized the situation as a pandemic. On May 24, 2020, the WHO Coronavirus Disease (COVID-19) Dashboard showed a total of 5,304,772 confirmed cases in 216 countries, areas or territories, including 342,029 deaths.”

United States Patent 10,874,687 December 29, 2020

In December 2019, a number of patients in Wuhan, China were diagnosed with pneumonia. These patients exhibited symptoms similar to the SARS (severe acute respiratory syndrome) outbreak in 2002-2003. In January 2020, the infectious cause was identified as a novel coronavirus that was named severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus-2 (SARS-CoV-2), and the resulting disease called coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19). This potentially severe and sometimes lethal disease quickly spread throughout the world. On Mar. 11, 2020, the World Health Organization declared COVID-19 a global pandemic. . . . .Huang et al., “Clinical features of patients infected with 2019 novel coronavirus in Wuhan, China“, Lancet, 2020, 395(10223), 497-506.”

United States Patent 7,371,525 May 13, 2008

FIGS. 2 and 3 illustrate the epidemiological relationships of SARS-CoV isolated from cities in China. . . . The names of the strains of SARS CoV isolated from each city or location are indicated below the name of the respective city. . . . Complete genome sequencing was performed for two viral isolates obtained from patients with distinct epidemiological backgrounds. Significant sequence variations were observed. One isolate (CUHK-Su-10) was epidemiologically linked to the first cluster of SARS cases originating from a Hong Kong hotel. The other isolate (CUHK-W1) was obtained from a patient with a recent travel history to southern China, and the sequence was almost identical to the isolates reported from Beijing and Guangzhou, China.

The index patient (“J”) at our hospital was a 26-year-old ethnic Chinese man who was admitted to the Prince of Wales Hospital on Mar. 4, 2003 was epidemiologically linked to the first local case of SARS, a nephrologist from Zhongshan, Guangdong Province, China, (FIG. 2) who visited Hong Kong in late February 2003. (Ksiazek T G, et al. N. Engl. J. Med. 2003 May 15;348(20):1953-66). Four days prior to symptom onset, J visited the hotel at the same floor where the nephrologist stayed . . Patient 8 had a history of traveling to Shenzhen, Guangdong Province, China (FIG. 2” . . . . . Our index case (J) was in turn epidemiologically linked to the index case in a Hong Kong hotel, 2, 3, 7 the nephrologist who previously worked in Zhongshan, China (FIG. 2). (Tsang K W, et al. N. Engl. J. Med. 2003 May 15;348(20):1977-85). The second isolate was derived from an individual who had a recent travel history to Shenzhen, China. . . . The most likely explanation for this observation is the fact that both CUHK-Su-10 and Tor2 were linked epidemiologically to the hotel stay of the Chinese nephrologist (FIG. 2B). (Tsang K W, et al. N. Engl. J. Med. 2003 May 15;348(20):1977-85). . . . However, a comparison of CUHK-W1 with the partial sequences for four viral isolates from mainland China revealed a much closer relationship. This observation is consistent with the history of Patient 8, which suggests that he had probably acquired his infection from Shenzhen, China. Among the sequences from mainland China, three viral isolates originated from patients in Beijing, while the remaining one was obtained from a patient in Guangzhou, China. Geographically, Zhongshan, Shenzhen and Guangzhou are cities in the Guangdong Province of China (FIG. 2). Zhongshan is located 200 km from the latter two cities, while Guangzhou is 160 km from Shenzhen. Hong Kong is located adjacent to Shenzhen, with the two cities sharing one border. The facts highlighted in the previous two paragraphs suggest that since the emergence of SARS-CoV in southern China, the virus has developed into at least two strains. One of the strains was closely related to the CUHK-Su-10 isolate, traceable to the nephrologist from Zhongshan, China (FIG. 3). (Tsang K W, et al. N. Engl. J. Med. 2003 May 15;348(20):1977-85). . . Furthermore, it is apparent from our analysis that the sequence variations in the SARS-CoV genome may show correlation with the geographical origin of the virus strain (FIG. 3). This correlation is demonstrable in the virus strains isolated within a city and between cities. Thus, molecular analysis may be a useful additional tool for the conduct of epidemiological investigations of SARS. For instance, such a line of investigation might ultimately allow one to identify the presumed animal ancestor of the SARS-CoV. . . . In the longer term, it is hoped that a detailed understanding of the biology of this virus would allow us to develop new therapeutic and vaccination approaches against SARS.”
